Story 4: “Lettered grading has got to go”

This article is an opinion piece written by Manas Pandit. Pandit makes the argument that the current letter grading and GPA system that most universities have in place is not a sufficient measurement of a student’s understanding of material. The way most college courses are structured, huge final and midterm exams play a major role in determining one’s final grade for the class. While these tests may measure certain skills, they do not necessarily provide an accurate measurement of how well a student actually understands the material they were taught. Pandit uses other universities as examples for alternative systems, such as Brown University where students have the option to be graded in terms of satisfactory/no credit in addition to written evaluations from professors. It may be difficult or unlikely to completely transform the system due to the fact that the GPA is so universally understood by employers, but regardless Pandit also points out that good grades do not necessarily provide you with the skills needed to succeed in an interview.
