Story 3: “UMass needs better public transportation”

This opinion editorial written by Zach Leach discusses the importance of public transportation and why UMass should improve their current system. Leach begins the article by explaining that during break, he had visited some friends at Georgia Tech. At their campus, students have access to a ride service similar to Uber that is free for all students and available all throughout the night, meanwhile at UMass, there is no such service available. The current bus system at UMass is explained as being overcrowded, inconsistent with scheduling, and not always available during the nighttime. Leach emphasizes the point that it can be difficult to get around campus, especially during the winter with freezing temperatures, snow, and excessive ice covering the ground. He also relates this problem at UMass to the larger issue regarding public transportation in America. The public transportation system has a priority of making a profit, turning the system into more of a privilege rather than a right. With a lack of funding going towards the transportation system at UMass, and bus drivers only making a few dollars over minimum wage, it creates a similar problem on campus. Leach argues that an Uber type of system, similar to that of Georgia Tech, being implemented to the UMass campus would create a safer and more beneficial way for students to get around.
