This article written by Julia Oktay discusses the current car shortage due to the COVID pandemic and how it is negatively affecting women specifically. As with many things, the pandemic caused a shortage of semiconductor chips that are needed for a lot of the essential functions of a car. With an already high demand of these chips pre pandemic combined with the increased purchases of electronics that use them throughout it, cars have been much more difficult to find at a reasonable price. Due to the fact that car sales has already been a sexist business model, the recent shortage has only contributed to women being offered unfair prices on cars. Oktay notes her recent experiences in trying to purchase a car where salesmen would not discuss finances over the phone (preventing her from being able to compare prices) and receiving ridiculous offers on cars that are usually reasonably priced. Oktay questions whether her male peers would receive the same treatment while trying to purchase a new car. She ends the article by noting that this specific issues is part of a larger picture, that women are often required to pay more than men for the same products.
