Story 16: “UMass needs more pedestrian walkways on campus”

This article is written by Luke Halpern, and similar to another article I read and summarized earlier this semester, it is about the traffic issues at the UMass campus. Recently, there have been two incidences where students walking around the UMass campus have been hit by cars, one of them even resulting in the student being killed. This highlights the serious traffic problem UMass is currently facing. Halpern’s opinion on the matter is that UMass should implement more pedestrian walkways around campus, which could solve many of the issues the University needs to fix. Halpern suggests more tunnels being built for students the walk under and cars to travel over, as there is already one on campus that seems to effectively serve its purpose. Halpern says that this solution could fix three specific problems such as pedestrian safety on campus, the traffic congestion issue, and would overall make the UMass campus a more “walkable community,” allowing for more student interaction and stronger sense of community.
