Story 13: “We need to change the way we teach math”

This article is written by Anay Contractor, a student studying math who believes that the way in which it is taught, especially in the U.S., needs improvement. Contractors main argument throughout this piece is that math is often taught as a subject that one is inherently good at. The education system in the U.S. tends to perpetuate this idea from a young age by doing things such as separating students into “gifted programs” and giving extra praise to students who succeed in the subject. While Contractor does think that students who apply themselves and work hard do deserve praise for their efforts, it’s still important to encourage all students when it comes to math. Contractor believes that more students would be able to succeed if they receive more encouragement from teachers. Another point that is brought up in this article is that in the U.S., math classes are separated into categories such as algebra, geometry, and so on. This separation can cause students to lack information in certain areas of math depending on the path they follow. Contractor concludes this piece by encouraging us to get the conversation going, and assuring young students that they can do well in math if they put in the work.
