This piece is written by Molly Hamilton and guides readers through some of the most influential albums/musical artists of the 1970’s. Hamilton first explains how the 1970’s was a very impactful decade for music, where less listened to genres like R&B and rock began to gain popularity among the public, while having a large cultural impact. The first album included in this article is “Blue” by Joni Mitchell, an album that conveyed deep emotions to the listener. This album also set the foundation for many other break albums that were released in the following years. The next album is “What’s Going On” by Marvin Gaye. This album really captures the essence of the time period of the 70’s while addressing political issues that are seen at the time (and even in the present), such as urging for unity among different classes and races. The third album mentioned in this article is “Rumours” by Fleetwood Mac. Despite the many struggles that the band members faced throughout the eight month recording process of this album, it still emerged to be one of the most influential albums of its time, and remains a classic. The next album is “Songs in the Key of Life” by Stevie Wonder. Even though Stevie Wonder was already a well known musical figure at the time, this album truly established his talents. This album explores topics on all different aspects of life, and went on to inspire many of great musical artists in years to come. The final album on this list is “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars” by David Bowie. Through this album, David Bowie was able to create an alter ego, establishing the concept in the music world. Hamilton encourages the reader to take the time and listen to the album in its entirety, as it is truly an experience.
