This article is written by Liam Rue. It is an opinion article that takes a closer look at why UMass and other public universities have become so expensive throughout the years. Rue points out that the main reason is most likely due to a lack of funding from the government, resulting in tuition costs to increase dramatically. One thing that played a major role in the decrease of funding from the state is the tax cuts for the rich that began back in 1990. From then, tuition costs have continued to become more and more expensive. Rue also explains that there may be other factors that contribute to the increase in tuition costs, such as frivolous spending by the university and construction projects, but these factors seem to be a lot less likely. For example, Rue points out that a large part of the funding for construction projects come from other sources like donations or state governments. This brings us back to the root of the issue, that overall public universities are not receiving enough funding from the government. Rue finishes the article by noting that one of the main purposes of public universities, such as UMass, is to provide anyone with accessible education. With the current costs for tuition, room and board, and other college expenses, college is no longer an accessible option for everyone.
