Story 1: “The hidden costs of Greek Life”

This article written by Katherine Kelly-Coviello instantly sparked my interest. The author of this piece, former sorority member, reveals why she had to drop out of the organization after only being a part of it for 3 weeks. Despite the fact that she got along with the other members of her sorority and enjoyed her time there for the most part, she explains that the financial burden that comes along with being a part of a sorority was not what she had initially expected. There are the obvious up-front fees and costs for living within a sorority house, that are already fairly expensive, and then there are also fees that are more hidden. Those who don’t already know other people in a sorority would likely not be aware of such expenses. This creates a bigger issue, as low-income and first-generation students have a more difficult time joining and staying in sororities. This organization that’s advertised as being an inclusive way to make friends and meet new people is actually very exclusive, and the system was essentially built to be that way by the amount of money that is required to not only join, but keep up with the events and experiences within a sorority.
